The Chess Game-Kingdom
There was a time when I would go to factories to ask if I could go through their discarded trials and errors. I would search through bins and piles, finding and discovering what seemed to me to be treasures or contemporary artifacts. It was a kind of journey of clues in metal scrap dumpsters, leading me to each place, and a story line slowly revealed itself to me. I took these pieces, reconstructed and combined them, and each took on a specific role. Things I found miles apart seemed to fit together. I began to build a chess game which I called the Kingdom, piece by piece: a mythic chess world excavated from industrial wastelands, and I traveled to different places to find or build more pieces. The King was forged from metal and a drill bit. I took these pieces traveling, photographing them in different environments. I documented everything I found in writing, taking Polaroids which became part of the work. I made primitive animation videos. The Queen’s chamber was blown in crystal and sculpted in red glass on the island of Murano. From the chamber came the Book of Days, a series of paintings of visions, colour, and dreams. The King was at times the Fisher King, sometimes the Railroad King. I told new stories and retold ancient myths with the pieces, and it became a playful journey. Here are some of the pages and photographs from the Kingdom of the Chess game.
Portavo questi pezzi in viaggio, fotografandoli in ambienti diversi.
